‘Outside-the-Box’ for Excellence, Creativity and Relevance by Elizabeth Okello
The saying “Make use of every opportunity in life because it only comes once,” is true of life, and true of an opportunity to joining the Professionals’ Fellowship of Deliverance Church. Before you roll your eyes, throw out the thought and take a walk, let us engage you for a second. We are asking you out on a date of a lifetime. We have got room for many a more. The youth, the married, the single, the elderly; it doesn’t matter your age or level of education or experience, there is an opportunity for you to learn, share and exploit your potential.
Six years ago, an idea to create a forum for Christians in the workplace to learn and share from one another was birthed at Nakasero Deliverance Church. From its fragile initiation stage, the idea was nurtured with tender care, gradually leading to its steady growth. Here at the professional’s fellowship, we promote excellence in service. We encourage people to put in their best effort in their respective fields or professions to give the best in their work. We have watched with amazement as this has turned out to be a stepping stone for many of the members at their workplaces. We believe that every professional is an ambassador of Christ in their place of work, representing Him in everything they do. Apart from sharing the gospel, members are encouraged to establish prayer altars and live a life of testimony.
Striving for relevance as much as we can, we have endeavored to meet the practical needs of our members, offering among others, life skills training, sports and fun, community and school outreaches, career exhibitions, group bible studies and prayer breakfast meetings. We have also established a savings scheme that is intended both to encourage a saving culture among workers and to create investment opportunities for members.
As part of their activities, the fellowship has had an opportunity to organize the highly effective Annual Inspire Conference, which brings together various varsity of professionals from different walks of life and leaves them. This highly inspirational gathering has left people spurred to act and influence their respective spheres of work. It is also an opportunity for professionals to network with others and market their skills by letting others know what services they offer. In this way, they build one another as well as the kingdom of God. ‘Inspire 2007’ was witnessed a rather different experience. This time round, Deliverance Church did not work in isolation, but came up with an idea of forming a synergy. We were able to work in association with other churches in Kampala to organize the conference. It was an exciting opportunity as a wealth of ideas and skills were put together to ensure its success.
This life-touching event has not remained stagnant but has begun to bear fruit. A number of people are taking bold steps to venture to greater heights. The aftermath of this conference is nothing but good news. We get testimonies of Job promotions, self employment ventures, and job creation opportunities in a labor market that is extremely competitive. It reflects an outside-the-box attitude that promotes creativity. As this dream continues to bear tangible fruit, we smile our way through any challenges that are bound to come, knowing that the Lord will surely cause us to prosper, even as our souls prosper. You see we are persuaded that that is His divine will for us.
