Matters of Doctrine - By Titus Oundo
Walking in the Word:

Titus became the Team leader in 2001 and he has been holding up prayerfully. Like the rest of the founders, he believes that the method of the foundation as it was based on Acts 13 has stayed to avoid operating haphazardly. Deliverance Church is often seen as a denomination that is rather quiet, with a strictness that many modern day Christians consider rather conservative.  With today’s liberal culture and “freedoms”, how do they maintain the membership and even grow? How does a church follow biblical instructions to the dot in today’s world?

The motto ‘Back to the Bible’ is the one thing at the heart of Deliverance Church. Things are not done simply because they are popular or palatable to the organisation. If the Bible speaks concerning a matter, the church speaks. If it is silent, she stays silent. That is the way it was at the beginning and that is what it is now. Sometimes Christians feel that the Bible is too hard and old fashioned, especially with this trend of technology and modernity.

There have been some challenges with the ‘Back to the Bible’ slogan sometimes. As Pastor Titus reveals, “It has been difficult for some people to appreciate the bible as it comes. Even if a scripture is from the Old Testament, it has to be interpreted without compromise. That is why Paul rebuked the Corinthians for tolerating certain things.”  The Deliverance family however has no regrets for taking such a stand. They would rather be unpopular than compromise the word of God. They maintain that they preach what the Holy Spirit wants them to preach; which is according to the scripture and deliver the doctrine according to His word. “The doctrine that we teach is contained in the word of God – without contradiction. Anything that is not from the book, anything that has merely been imported in the teaching is not in our interest; even if it is so popular as to pull crowds. True doctrine to us is whether the Lord says so or not.”

The church’s doctrine ranges from being born again, to the entire gospel of the virgin birth of Jesus Christ.  They believe in the Trinity, the power of the Holy Spirit and speaking in other tongues. “We do pray in tongues though some people do not like the loudness of it,” says Titus.  But many have been edified and grown in the faith. This is because of the level of balance that has been achieved from walking in the word of God. It is through walking in the word that one finds liberty and the move of the spirit. However, with all this, there are issues Titus and his colleagues will not compromise on: “Let something be borne by the spirit and not by man. I would not want to put something on you which I can not sustain tomorrow. The bible says, that which is born of spirit is spirit, and it will stand the test of time.”
